Education and Feeding Program News

God's grace to all!

With the cooperation of the bishop of the Evangelical Methodist Church in Costa Rica, Strong Missions is opening up 2 additional educational centers at the end of 2011. Approximately 200 students will receive an elementary and high school education in the Methodist churches located in Alajuela, Palmares and Los Guido de Desamparados. The 3 centers will cost a total of $19,058.82 for the 2011-2012 year. Additionally, we will offer 15 educational grants, from elementary school to college students. The total cost of these grants is $8250.

In addition for the feeding programs to continue, one year round in Los Guido feeding 50 children, plus an additional 50 children during the summer school break, and 2 programs in Carrillos during the same break feeding 100 additional children, we will need $23,600 for the food, cooking gas, electric, water, and salary for cooks, not including repairs/replacements of kitchen items.

We absolutely need your help with this work. There is nothing more important than education if we really want to break the cycle of poverty and it's very hard for students to concentrate on their studies if their stomachs are growling. Education News

I need to say a few words about the ever-growing education program we are sponsoring for the Bishop of the Evangelical Methodist Church, Fernando Palomo, and the churches for which he cares. In addition to the Education Center we opened the beginning of 2011 in Los Guido, and its success this year, we are at the end of this 2011 opening two additional sites in Alajuela and in Palmares.

2011 is ending with 58 young to older adults studying all day every Saturday in Los Guido, with 32 taking exams the end of October. Others are still working on their legalization papers, and until those are finalized they cannot take such exams. Regardless, the education they are receiving is helping them to better educate themselves and the children in their households as well as providing the example to those children and to all the community that such education is important and necessary. Ideas and mindsets are being changed, and that is a miracle in and of itself.

Now at the end of November and beginning of December 2011, education will be provided in Alajuela and Palmares Methodist Churches, each open two nights per week. We expect between 100 and 200 students to participate in these two programs, based on those who have already signed up. Depending on their economic situation, some students are asked to pay a little for material and exam costs, which also helps cover the costs of their fellow peers who are less fortunate. We are providing the remainder, including salaries and travel expenses for the teachers, books, and other expenses when the students cannot afford them. Of course this is the case for the majority of Los Guido students, who cannot afford much if any to offset material and exam costs.

The overall cost for the 3 education centers, beginning the end of this year and carrying forth until October of 2012 (exams are held in April and October) is $19,058.82. In addition, we now have 7 students signed up for educational grants, ranging from elementary school to college students, and we expect as many as 15 total by January of 2012. We begin the scholarship program the 1^st of January to help with uniforms and supplies for the new school year, which kicks off the first week of February. To provide scholarships for all 15 students, it will cost approximately $750 per month or $8250 for an 11 month year, with our last scholarship payment to families falling at the beginning of November.

We absolutely need your help with this work. There is nothing more important than education if we really want to break the cycle of poverty. Do not believe for a second that a small donation does not help us in this work. Everything counts, and God will take your gift and multiply it. Believe it! We certainly do. Let us know if you want to partner with us. These folks are working hard to better their lives, they deserve it, and you and I are called by our Lord to help. I look forward to hearing from you…

Hello folks,

First I want to thank all of our partners in 2011 who helped to make it a successful year for the project recipients. We certainly were able to get a lot done, and it looks like with so many returning and so many new partnerships being made, we’ll be able to accomplish even more in 2012. God is so good!

I also want to say a special thanks to the folks who helped us construct our own office and dormitory space for our U.S. full and part-time staff, and I hope you know that your work is helping us to work more effectively and efficiently. How nice it is to have an office, and not have 8 people working out of a closet! Thank you for your work and your continued faith in us as we work to meet needs here in Costa Rica all year long.

Testimony from 5 time team leader-Bruce Black

Strong Missions has been driven by the needs of Costa Ricans and their children. I have watched over the years as Charlie, his family, and staff have worked with God's blessings to meet these needs. It might be a house for a family, money for student to afford school, supporting a feeding program, building a building, church or playground, working with the handicapped and orphans, the list is always growing. Every year I am amazed by how Strong Missions programs touch the lives of those they serve. God has found an advocate and worker and he is Strong!

Our Group has returned to work with Strong missions many times and each time is a unique experience. Charlie and his staff practice awesome hospitality. They customize our trips by matching our resources and team abilities to the needs of those they serve. When it comes time to explore Costa Rica, you'd be hard pressed to find a better guide in Country, as they know and can take you to places you will never forget.

Farewell from Molly....

It is not what you give, but what you do with what you have been given. In June 2007, I was called to become a missionary. At first I was like why me……I am just a small, tiny woman, I don’t know another language, I don’t want to give everything up……but God doesn’t pick the equipped, he equips those he picks. So I trained and became an UMVIM (United Methodist Volunteer in Mission) through the General Board of Global Ministry (GBGM). I sold everything and went to Costa Rica to be a volunteer with Strong Missions for the summer of 2011.

I didn’t know what to expect, but I know I was called to serve. Little did I know how much this experience would transform my life. Many groups think they are “building” a home, but they are really building hope, dignity and restoring faith to people. Many will ask “but why God?”, but let’s change that to “but what can we do God?” Every week for 10 weeks, I met a different group or family……17 in total. I enjoyed learning your names, your story and why you were here serving and I hope you enjoyed mine. Y’all will forever be in my heart and prayers. I was touched by so many people (groups, staff, interns, etc..) and I will always treasure all of these great memories.

I would also like to share a prayer that was written by Archbishop Oscar Romero.

This is what we are about. We plant the seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces effects far beyond our capabilities. We can’t do everything and there is a sense of liberation in realizing that. This enables us to do something and do it very well. It may be incomplete, a step along the way, an opportunity for the Lord’s grace to enter and do the rest. We may never see the end results but that is the difference between the master building and the worker. We are workers, not master buildings, ministers, not messiahs. We are prophets of a future not of our own. Amen.

Oscar's house....almost done

A seed was planted on June 6^th as the demolition of Oscar’s house began. This project was accomplished by 17 different groups/families and is expected to be finished at the end of August. Lives were transformed while building and we all know that Oscar’s family has been transformed…..a full circle effect which warms everyone’s hearts. As groups would leave, Oscar would pray over them and many cried as they heard him speak. Sometimes God has to break our hearts to see what is breaking his heart. The seed(s) couldn’t be planted without all of you doing what God called you to do while you were here. Strong Missions would like to thank each group/family for all of their hard work this past summer. Enjoy the pictures and video and we hope to see you again next year. Blessings.

This summer has gone by faster than I could have ever expected and I am saddened by the fact that I am going home in just a few short days. Coming here two months ago, I had no idea what to expect, but I have met wonderful people, made amazing friends, and worked on some incredible projects.

In the past two months, I have met many people that have all contributed to my experience here in Costa Rica. I met people from various states in the US that I would never have had the chance to encounter. Each of them have shown me how much people across our country care about helping those in need.

Of these people I have met, I have made some incredible friends. Spending two months in a foreign country with someone really helps form a special bond. The other interns and I have become closer than I ever would have imagined, but I guess that’s what happens when you spend almost every waking moment together. We have laughed together more than anything and I cannot picture it being any other way. I have also formed wonderful friendships with the full time staff here and it saddens me that I don’t know when I will see them again.

I have helped work on three amazing projects this summer--Oscar’s house, the Pentecostal Church, and the Methodist Church. The groups have done amazing work this summer! I am sad that I am not going to be around to see any of these projects finished, but I know the groups that come after I leave will do a great job finishing them.

I wish everyone at Strong Missions luck in the years to come and hope that many groups find their way to Costa Rica to help carry out their wonderful mission.

Its insane to think that the summer is coming to a close...well, my summer at least seeing as its "winter" here. Out of a total of 9 weeks here in Costa Rica I only have 5 days left. It is so surreal.

So much has changed in these last two months. Oscar's house has been torn down, leveled, and a new one built in its place. We've made great progress on the feeding program areas in both the Methodist and Pentacostal churches. My spanish has grown...I can actually talk my way around a construction site now. And last, but most certainly not least, I have met some of the most amazing and influential people of my life...the workers, the cooks, the staff, the other interns, and the people of Costa Rica, I love them all!

It has been an awesome opportunity to spend my summer here working with Strong Missions and I can't wait to come back!

Los Guido update

Groups always have the opportunity to visit the feeding program we fund in Los Guido, one of the most impoverished areas of Costa Rica. 50 children receive one nutritious meal a day, although there are approximately 1000 needy and deserving children within three blocks of the church where they're fed. The cost to feed a child for a month is $28, and that also covers the pay and insurance for the one full-time cook as well as gas and other kitchen supplies. We would love to be able to feed an additional 50 children, but we simply do not have the funds to do so at this time.

The groups help distribute meals to the children at lunchtime, eats lunch themselves, and then follow with time spent with the children. This can be VBS activities, a simple craft, or just playtime. The children's ministry team also begins this time with upbeat songs for the the groups and the children to sing and dance to, and teams generally have one of the powerful experiences during their time with us.

In addition, we're helping educate 69 students every Saturday by paying a retired teacher to give age appropriate classes throughout the whole day. This program cost us about 700 per month, and we need help in order to continue this service to students. We hope to have several more feeding programs and education centers up and running within the months and years to come.

Groups also have the opportunity to hold VBS with local children here in Carrillos. This is a great opportunity to interact with the local children on a daily basis, and the kids never want the time to end!

Busy summer......

We’ve had a busy summer so far! Lots of work has been done and there is still plenty of work to be finished before the summer is over.

We have officially moved into our new home! Our office building is completed with the group this week doing some final paint touches on the railings. Scott, Rebecca, and our 4 lovely interns have been safely living there for a month now! We are also now completely in control of a great house that can sleep 35 people and a hotel that we can change to accommodate the needs of the groups!

Along with completing the office, we have had three other projects this summer: Oscar’s house, the Methodist Church, the Pentecostal Church.

Oscar’s house is coming along great! Six weeks ago, our first group started by demolishing his existing house. In the weeks that followed, the ground was leveled, ditches were dug, the retaining wall was built, and cement walls were put up. This week the group will be pouring the cement floor and finishing the roof! We hope to have the house finished in August for Oscar and his family to move into.

The Methodist Church is a project where we are adding on to the existing building to make room for a feeding program for 100 children. Groups worked on this project a year ago building the retaining wall. This summer the groups helped lay block on an entire side of the building. This week the group will continue laying block for another side of the building.

We have made significant progress on the Pentecostal Church where we are adding a second floor to give room for another feeding program for 100 children. This summer the groups have dug holes that will one day be the base for the pillars holding up the second floor. We also worked with lots of rebar! Groups worked hard to make rebar cages and columns to reinforce the strength of the concrete in the holes.

Update part 3 of 3

As you all know, we’re not just building. We also continue to be very active in Los Guido, a rough and tough inner city area which offers little opportunities to its inhabitants. Drugs, gangs, prostitution, and violence run rampant at times.

We have restarted the feeding program in the Los Guido Methodist Church, now feeding 50 kids per day, and providing a large, nutritious meal. We’re now spending a little more than a dollar per day per child just on food, not to mention gas, pay/insurance for the main cook, kitchen needs, etc., and we’re pleased with the outcome. The total cost comes to about $32 per child per month. Due to early giving this year we have the 50 children covered until October, but we still need $1600 per month for November and December 2011, and that’s with no increases in number of children or inflation, or any sudden extra expenses. Of course, if those months come in through giving as well, our next step is to begin raising the number of children receiving a meal. As there are 1000 needy kids within just a few blocks of the church, the sooner we can feed more the better.

We have also set up an educational center in the church there, at this time receiving 64 school age children every Saturday for classes. This in conjunction with public schools and institutes should ensure that many students can finish their schooling through high school and perhaps get out of such a tough neighborhood. We are paying one retired professor to take care of most of the classes, and we’re hunting for an English teacher and a high school math professor to cover the other needs. This professor will also begin teaching classes during the week at the Alajuela Methodist Church, beginning sometime around August. This program is costing only $700 per month as it is now, and the additional program in Alajuela should add just another $200 per month in expenses. Again, it’s the same professor teaching in both places, keeping the cost down. Of course there will be some cost increases once we find the additional teachers for Math and English, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.

Finally, we have one more feeding program that we expect to help in the near future, near El Infernillo. This is another tough neighborhood, only 10 minutes from our base, and a Methodist Church on the outskirts of this neighborhood is already feeding kids on Sunday afternoons, after church. We hope to be able to help this program as well, with time. That would bring our total, within just a few years, to 4 feeding programs and hopefully just as many educational centers. Education is the sure way to end the cycle of poverty, and kids need good nutrition for their minds to work correctly.

With the move of our headquarters we’ve incurred some immediate needs, and some teams have begun to ask how they can help. We will need to buy a washer/dryer, a couple of microwaves, an additional refrigerator, a vacuum, and a stove with oven. Pretty much in that order. If there are folks who would like to help us with these things, we would be most appreciative.

Earthquake: we're okay

Interrupting the 3 part update to quickly say that we're fine, in case any of you were wondering how we'd weathered the 6.0 earthquake we experienced today. Thank you for your concern, to those that were wondering.

On to projects…We’re finishing up the community park/playground as we speak, and we’ve begun building the new office and apartments for the interns and program assistants. Office construction began the first of April and will be done by the middle of May.

Beginning the end of May we’ll finish up the park and begin a house for a member of the local Methodist Church. Don Oscar is the patriarch of 7 family members crammed into a house that could fall during the next strong earthquake. We therefore plan to have that project finished by August at the latest.

Summer months will also hold the return to the feeding program/parsonage building construction at the local Methodist Church, and this project will become our priority project (like the park up until now) until it is done, probably lasting 2 more years after this summer. When it is finished we’ll be able to feed 100 children there. In addition, this summer we’re adding a second floor to the local Assembly of God Church, also so that we can feed as many as 100 hundred children there in the near future. Both of these churches now have temporary feeding programs, but there are approximately 200 children in the Carrillos areas who need better nutrition, all the time.

In the fall the plan is to build a house in the southern part of Costa Rica for Alvaro’s mother. He bought a piece of land for her, but simply cannot afford to build her a house. She desperately needs one as once or twice a year the area river floods and she has water up to her waist. Alvaro’s other brother sleeps in the ceiling to keep an eye on their things when there’s water in the house. It’s time to eliminate this stress from all their lives and get her into a small house on the new, safe piece of land. This should take us 6 weeks, and it will be completed between the Fall teams, who will work mostly in the Methodist Church in Carrillos.

Hello all,

Charlie here. So much is happening, it’s time to catch you all up again regarding what’s happening with Strong Missions and our different ministries. I suspect this will be posted in several installments.

First of all, the addition of our two program assistants, Rebecca last summer and Scott the beginning of this year, is working out fantastic. They’ve learned so fast and work so hard that it is allowing me to spread out and begin to work in other areas. One of those areas is marketing, as we’re still a little down in numbers for 2011, and therefore we still need numerous for this year to finish the projects we have lined up. Remember, we’re still offering $100 off per person, for a team of 10 or more, for Fall months (September through the first week of December this year).

With the increased marketing, we’re planning to visit various churches with which we have ongoing relationships, as well as visit new interested churches and distribute information at youth and mission conferences, etc. If you would like a visit from us, please let us know, and we’ll try our best to get to your neck of the woods asap.

We’re now also beginning to take contact info for medical staff, as we have a ton of people interested in our putting a few such teams together for them. We have the areas to work, much of which with undocumented immigrants, as they tend to fall through the cracks. We’re excited about the number of people wanting to help as well as the possibility to help in such a way, and we suspect there will be various opportunities for medical staff to do so within the next year or so.

We’re also moving headquarters, as the owner of the former property increased the rent by 15%, and let us know there would be 15% added on each year. That’s just not feasible if we want to keep costs down for teams, so God blessed us, the same day as a matter of fact, with a large two story house connected to the Hotel Los Horcones, just 200 yards from the old place. We’re also renting the hotel beginning May 1, which means with additional hotel traffic we should be able to keep team lodging costs down for years to come, perhaps until we buy land and build our own place.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to share with you some pictures of the new house. If you didn't hear, we moved out of the 2 houses into one two-story house. We are building the office and some apartments there too, so please excuse the mess on the outside, but the inside is nice and clean.

It's been another full month here in Carrillos, and here are the photos to prove it! This month, we've enjoyed the company and service of Oakwood UMC from Iowa, Carthage UMC from Illinois, and the youth of Kingsbridge Parish in Ontario.

This is the ramp and stairs of the playground. Forms made, cement poured...and the Ontario youth also poured a lot of the sidewalk running through the park.

This is some of the Ontario youth, watering the stairs and smoothing out the ground so they can pour the sidewalk.

The Iowa group dug the trench for this part of the wall, and they laid the block. Then the Canadians formed and poured the top, and laid the block for the corner section. Truly an international effort.

How many people are in this picture? Yes, that orange hat in the second septic hole is on top of David's head. The Carthage group, including these hardworking couples from Atlanta, worked to prepare Strong Missions' new headquarters down the street. They also did welding, painting, and some holes in concrete for our new office building.

In addition to their park work, the Iowa group painted and cleaned a classroom at the school.

Educational Progress

Some of you have already heard about the pilot educational program we started in Los Guido at the beginning of the year. For $600 a month (supported by donations), we pay a retired professor to go to Los Guido and teach classes. We started with 25 students. Now, a couple of months later, we have 64 students, ranging from primary to secondary (there are multiple classes). Many of these students are attending public school already, but this gives them the extra help they need to progress and make it through. The desire to learn is strong, because education gives opportunity.
We're very excited at how well this new program is going, and we're hoping to set up a similar program in Alajuela. Very promising!

It's already February, and a lot has been happening here in Carrillos. We've had wonderful people from various parts in the midwestern US (and a few from elsewhere) busy working. The playground/park walls have their final coats cement, and the long bench is done. They also did some grading above the upper wall, and dug out and poured the sidewalk. I'm continually amazed at how fast things get done around here--the Wisconsin VIM group did that whole bench in their five work days, from digging the trench to laying the block, to pouring the concrete top. (Of course, I'm especially proud of them because I am also from WI.) To be fair, I should also mention that the Minnesota group brought some incredible skills here, completing 30 high chairs for the Posada de Belen, sewing blankets and knitting hats, and doing a wide variety of other projects as well.
And we also did another session of VBS at the Pentecostal church, and dedicated painters have finished several classrooms, exterior walls, and metal stairs at the school. Catching a quick breath before volunteers from Iowa arrive in a few days. (Really, what is with all these midwestern people coming now? It must be all the snow up there right now, I keep forgetting what they're escaping from!)

Hi, my name is Scott Andrews, and I am also one of Charlie's Program Assistants, working here with Rebecca. The year has just begun, and good things are already happening here. First on my list, of course, is that I am here! It's been a joy learning and working with the 2 groups we've already had, and my new coworkers. It's also been very productive--in two weeks the two teams (a total of 20 volunteers, plus our fine local staff) dug and poured foundation for the last part of the playground's retaining wall, then laid block and poured concrete to top it off. They also topped off the rest of the big wall with concrete, and one of the groups spent 3 days doing VBS with well over 100 neighborhood kids at one of the local churches. Start looking for new pictures soon!

I find myself very impressed and and thankful to God for my new coworkers here, and for the two teams I've already been fortunate enough to work with, and I am looking forward to meeting many more in the future!

A note from Charlie (Part 4 of 4)

Finally, my family life has become the most incredible thing in my life, and in this line of work that’s saying something. Angela is finishing high school (she’s completed 6 years worth of studying in about 3 years), and if all goes well she’ll be starting the university next summer. She’s really excited, and I admit that if I had been as committed to my studies as is she, I would have made the dean’s list many more times than I did. I’m very proud of her, as am I of our daughter, Anna Elena. She’s walking and talking, and she loves futbol (soccer) and football, and with the Rangers record this year she’s even taking to baseball. She likes to sit on my lap and hoot at the games. She can even say “touchdown”. Okay, she roots for all teams, even the opponents of the Texas teams, but we’ll work on that with time. My first mentor and still the man I consider my pastor, Richard Strait, and his wife Renee, came to visit from Wisconsin after our not seeing each other in more than 14 years. He baptized Anna Elena, and friends and family surrounded us. We felt God’s presence, and we are so appreciative of our UM tradition that allows us to practice infant baptism. It’s wonderful to have people in your life who mean so much and give so much love. God’s grace abounds!

Overall, it’s been a great year, and it’s looking like we will grow yet again in the year to come. We hope that you will all be a part of what we’re doing here. Over the 7 years we’ve been here we’ve made friendships that will last through this life, and we believe into the life that follows. You have shared your love with the people of Costa Rica and with us, and our lives will never be the same. We know the economy continues to struggle in the U.S., and we continue to hold all of you in our prayers and meditations.

The staff changed some the first of the year, as we moved locations and several of our workers felt they could not follow us. We therefore said tearful goodbyes, gave all good severance packets, and began to find new people to help us.

Alvaro Torres, my assistant director, worked for us part-time before (he was also working another job at the time) and has both followed us to Carrillos and given up his other job. He is an accountant and almost attained an additional degree as an engineer, so he keeps us in good shape around here. I could not do what I do now without him.

Wilberth Mora also followed us to Carrillos. He is our job supervisor and has been with me for 6 of the 7 years I’ve been in the country. It’s still hard to wipe the smile off his face; although I’m sure as a boss I’ve done it once or twice.

In addition, his older brother Warner has joined us, and brings with him as much experience in construction as Wilberth.

Wilmer Benavides, Angela’s brother, has also joined us, and in addition to being a quick learn in both construction and English he also teaches Latin dancing to teams during their stay.

The cooks have also changed, with Flora, the wife of Luis Alvarado, our transportation guy, leading the crew.

Under her we have Ana and when needed Alvaro’s wife, Marleny Cruz, also pitches in.

Finally, Rebecca Rusnak, from Valparaiso, IN, has joined us full time as one of our program assistants, and Scott Andrews, from Waukesha, WI, will join us the end of they year as our other program assistant. These are both capable, wonderful young people who are and will be great permanent additions to our staff.

We are very pleased with our Carrillos staff, and we feel as though we are even more efficient and effective this year in comparison to years gone by.

Okay, a few financial matters. Strong Missions will be incorporated the end of this year. We cannot form a Costa Rican foundation or association due to a foundation being too specific for our work here, and the association allowing the possibility of others taking control of our organization in the future. This means that for tax exemption most donations will still go through UMVIM in New York, and that procedure will soon be posted on the website for easy access.

Additionally, we’ve raised team prices by around 4% for 2011, as the dollar dropped in value by 10% in 2010, thereby eliminating that much of our operating funds, about $35,000. Now there’s an increase of about 3-½ % inflation as well. You can see that even with the 4% increase it does not cover the loss, but we’re expecting continued growth in numbers, which will make up the difference.

We are offering a $100 per person incentive for teams of 10 or more working with us September through the middle of November, as this is a time with very few teams. Any team that comes in during this time is a great help in finishing projects for the year and in our ending the year with money in the bank for the start of the next year.

Donations continue to come in, reaching nearly $50,000 to support the feeding programs, the school scholarships, and the pastoral support, as well as various other areas of ministry. We thank those folks as well for their continued faithfulness. Again, there are hundreds of children and families who have directly been affected by your generosity.

A note from Charlie (Part 2 of 4)

During the 2010 year we worked on the park/playground for the community, and we hope it will be finished around the middle of 2011. It is quite a project. The admin building at the school is finished except for the windows, for which the school is responsible. The feeding program and parsonage at the church also continues, and we should be working on that project for the next two years. In addition we’ve help remodel homes and churches, doing small repairs as well when needed. Along with those continuing projects, we have some interesting projects for the future, including the building of 3 classrooms for the local high school, building a second floor in the Assembly of God Church for another feeding program for poor kids, as well a dorm building, school building, and new cafeteria for a home for teenage mothers and their children. Those of you who knew Geysa from the orphanage will be happy to know that the Catholic Church and the govt. set her up in this new ministry site, which is incredibly powerful, and is located only 25 minutes from our worksites. We know Geysa’s heart is true and that she loves these kids, and we’ll be happy to help her, and the girls, for years to come. Tell me that’s not a God thing!

A Note from Charlie

Hello all, and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for our most successful year yet. Before the season is over next month, we will have had close to 570 trip participants through here this year, well over the 500 we had in 2008 before the economy crashed (we only had 300 people through here in 2009). Sure, we had a few incentives such as cheaper transportation and lodging, but regardless it amazes me how the faithful of God came forward during the crisis in the U.S. to make a difference in the lives of those who still have far less than do we. I’ve said it before and I say it again… I work with the best people; those of faith, but whose faith carries them into the world to make a difference. Thanks again for your dynamic faith, for we could not do what we do without you.

We changed locations this year, as the theft and danger of San Jose became too much for us to expect teams, and the organization, to deal with. I was even shot at June 1, 2009, between Guadalupe and Moravia (between the church where teams lodged and my office). We therefore elected to leave San Jose (don’t worry, we’re still supporting and visiting the ministry in Los Guido), as we did not want a violent crime to be perpetrated again a team or one of it’s members. We chose Carrillos Bajos of Poas, just 20 minutes from the airport in the opposite direction of San Jose. Carrillos has a much more rural feel, and this has allowed teams to spend more time in the community getting to know the locals, as it’s much safer to move around even during evening hours. The community has welcomed us with open arms, and the children look forward to seeing teams arrive at the back gate. We are active with both the Evangelical Methodist Church located and the Assembly of God Church located here, in construction, with their new feeding programs, and with worship and VBS activities with their children. At this time we also have the Carver family from Kentucky, Bruce, Kathy, Chessa & Naomi, here for 4 months teaching English to the locals. Kathy teaches ESL in the U.S., so this has been quite a service both to my workers and the community at large. They have an estimated 65 people or so to whom they’re teaching, ranging from children to adults, with classes being offered several times a week for each group of students. It is quite a ministry in and of itself, and this family has become endeared to us at Strong Missions and to the community at large. Future projects abound, so we expect to continue the work here in Carrillos for several more years at least, before we move to another nearby small town and begin community development there as well. We hope all will come and experience Carrillos, as it is indeed fertile ground.

Well since I'm posting, I didn't quit! LOL (see last blog) We are on 3 days of concrete with one day left. Sweet!

Had a very emotional afternoon with the group from North Point University visiting the Posada de Belen in Coyol. Just the story of the girls who were raped, violated, molested, etc. and now have babies.....babies having babies....brought tears to some eyes. It's a very powerful place and we are going to start to work together with them to see what we can do. For those of you who know Geysa from the orphanage she is now working there and my is she blessed and spreads those blessings onto many.

Not that we haven't been working all this time (well I have, not quite sure about Charlie...haha...just kidding), but we are about to receive our first fall team. They are going to enjoy the beach first and then come back on Monday to continue work on the "comedor" the building for the feeding program and pastoral housing at the Methodist Church in Carrillos.

I can't wait to get back to pouring concrete....that's my favorite!!!! Seriously. So if the plans change, I will have to quit, and that would just stink. 1 out of 4 days of concrete would just make my day. 4 out of 4 would rock.

I will be uploading new pictures in less than 10 days. PS....the school looks awesome! It lacks windows, but it's getting there. I wonder if we are going to paint it green....it seems like all the painting since I arrived has been done some shade of green.

Meet the Carver Family

I would like to introduce you to the Carver Family from Hopkinsville, Kentucky, who arrived on August 1st. They will reside here until Dec. 19th.

Kathy, her husband-Bruce, their daughter-Chessa, & Naomi-their granddaughter, felt the calling to teach the people of Carrillos English.

The classes are 3 times a day, 3 days a week. Additionally, they are conducting courses 3 days a week for the Strong Missions team staff.

For those of you who had the privilege to get to know and work with Christian Cuellar, in case you already didn't know, he is heading back to the US today.

Our thoughts and prayers are with him as he returns after giving almost 9 months of himself to the people of Carrillos, Costa Rica, and Strong Missions.

Prayers for a safe and uneventful flight back (@205), prayers for his job search and upcoming interviews, and to know that it's all in God's hands and worrying won't get us anywhere.

Maybe a last bit of advice from him: don't put the hot dogs in the microwave with the plastic! :)

No seriously, I'm sure he would say something like: PURA VIDA and GNAM GNAM. (YUM, YUM)

It's been a blessing to work with him! All the best for the future and see you back here sometime in the near future.

One week later....& fall activity

Wow! It has been a crazy summer. Crazy good that is. :)

It has just been over a week since the last summer team left. Yet, it feels like it was just a day or two ago. I miss so many of you. PS, I finally broke down and got facebook. Some of you asked for it early in the summer, now I have it.

What a great year and summer it has been in Carrillos. I pray that you are as excited as I am for the work that God has laid upon our hearts to continue during here. We ask for your continuing support and prayers as we move forward in this journey. Know also that you are in our prayers.

I hope this was an amazing experience for all of you. If there is anything we can do for you and your teams to make this experience even better, let us know ASAP. Contact either Charlie or myself. I can't believe 2 months have gone by so quickly. It was exciting to see old faces as well as getting to know new ones. I pray that your experience was as fulfilling as mine has been.

I have experienced God in new ways with you and through you. Know that you are in my prayers and I hope we can serve together again in the near future.

The work continues here; not just on the actual buildings, but also on building relationships with the people of Carrillos, Costa Rica. I pray that your experience here will foster future relationships with people of your community in the U.S. and the people of Carrillos.

Building Up!

Hola everybody:) Here are some updates on everything that has been going on at Strong Missions.

+The Work Sites+

The Carrillos community park construction project-

The retaining wall that surrounds the park area and built in front of a high hillside is just about complete. All the cinder blocks have been laid and all that is left to do is fill the wooden forms with concrete that will be used make the the support columns and headers. A smaller and shorter wall is being built around the boundaries of the park that face the street which will be key in maintaining the safety of children from oncoming traffic. Recent groups have had more than their share of trench digging and concrete work. Through the strong spirit of service that each missions team brings, it is all coming along nice and smoothly despite the occasional refreshing downpour of rain that floods the trench with water!

The San Luis Elementary school office building project-

The construction of the school office building is really coming along quickly as well. What was only trenches a maze of trenches with some re-bar placed down in them, is now an actual the near completion of a building structure. On every work day that there's a missions group serving with us, the children of the area happily see the work of the groups and are eager to try to communicate and play with the 'gringos'. Needing to be completed in this high volume season of groups (typically lasting into mid-August), greater priority is being placed on finishing up this work project for the community of Carrillos. This construction project will greatly benefit the elementary school since current office and administration space is small, cramped, and needing of a greater space to better manage and administrate the school and its young students of the community.

Palabra Viva Iglesia Metodista de Carrillos-

The construction of an additional building has gone quite a ways in this past month. Despite the problem due to the great rainfall that easily flooded and muddied up the trench area, the mission groups proved to be real workhorses and laid the foundation concrete and re-bar to move on to the great deal of block laying that needed to be done. As a fruit of the servant attitude, the wall is rising quickly section by section.

+Interaction with the children of the area+

In addition to the various construction sites that Strong Missions is involved in, a majority of the groups that come to work and serve had conducted vacation bible schools (VBS) for the children of the community. They have been held at the local pentecostal church, the methodist church, and at the San Luis elementary school. Typically the VBS's involve art and craft activities along with interactive games for the kids to take part in. It is such a great interaction and time of sharing for both the people visiting from the U.S. and for the children of the small community here in Carrillos where safe open space to play is very limited resulting in the children either forced to stay home or risk playing in the unsafe street traffic.
But with each group that comes to serve, they continued to be taken to the methodist church of Los Guidos to experience the impact that this small church is making in the poor area of its community. They help with the children's feeding program by serving the kids food and interacting with them, play games with them, and even partake in a lively worship times of music and dancing! Each group that comes is greatly impacted by Los Guidos and by the service that Pastor Edgar Ponce and his family do there.

+The Wet Season+

Though it is the summer season in the U.S., here in Costa Rica it is the winter season or better known as the wet season. On a typical day, it is quite sunny and warm during the morning hours, and cools down significantly during the afternoon and evening with cloud cover which more often than not, leads to rain. In regards to the groups, rain boots and rain jackets are very much helpful and highly recommended to get around the work sites. However despite, the continual rainy weather, cold weather is not much of an issue; thus minimizing the need for much cold weather clothing. Simply having a rain jacket and a longsleeve t-shirt is enough to keep warm especially if traveling up to the Poas Volcano and/or the cloud forest of Monteverde.

Getting Into Full Gear

As the opening week of the summer 2010 season comes to a close, every worksite has already seen major progress and visible change thanks to all the hard work put in by the 39 member crew from Houston-based West U. United Methodist Church. We broke ground at the elementary school and have provided countless hours of entertainment for the students. Apparently there is something very intriguing about a bunch of gringos armed with pick-axes and shovels, but although the sight of over three dozen hot, sweaty, and energetic young workers has become a daily occurrence for the local people of Carrillos, the Strong Missions crew has also positively impacted the community, especially the local children, in a variety of ways. Over the last two days, West U has held an exciting VBS program for the local kids, which included arts and crafts, games, and of course, plenty of soccer. The kids' excitement about the program led many of them to follow the group to the local indoor soccer field afterwards for an evening of 6 on 6 competition. However, as the folks from Texas have surely learned, one of life's greatest joys is found through the act of service. Today we took them to visit the Methodist Church of Los Guidos, which is situated in one of the most impoverished neighborhoods in the country, where they literally gave up their own food in order to provide lunch for the children there. As always, the very presence of volunteers lit up the kids' eyes and put smiles on all their faces, giving them plenty of energy to participate in the scheduled activities that the group from Houston had prepared for them. As the first group of the summer season, the people from West U. have definitely set the bar high, and we at Strong Missions are stoked to see what else God has in store for the local community as we look forward to welcoming the hundreds of volunteers still to come this summer.

The start of busy season

With today's arrival of the 39 person group from West University UMC located in Houston, Texas- we find ourselves in full swing with the busy season of mission groups lasting from June, July, and into the beginning of August.

Tomorrow we shall start working on the 3 work projects that we have initiated here in Carrillos:
1) the continuation of the construction of the community park/playground in the small city center
2) working on the foundation of a building that will house restrooms and a space for a children's feeding program at the local methodist church
3) and breaking ground to build up an building for office space at Carrillos Elementary School.

So long for time off. Hello missions work. It's time to shine.

Howdy ya'll! Click on that top link to see some photos showing the current status of the houses where most of the groups coming over the next few months will be living while working here with us in Carrillos!

Recently completely work projects on the houses:
-awning was added to the the front porch area of the main house.
-additional toilets and shower stalls were added to the side of the main house.
-a water holding tank installed in case of unexpected water shut offs.

This week the work crew will be focusing on constructing additional bunk beds for both houses which can hold 2 dozen people in each house. More sleeping space will be added as need be.

the summer work projects and a Fall team discount

The summer work projects for 2010:
1) For the Methodist church in Carrillos: construction of feeding area that is needed for the feeding program, a battery of bathrooms, and pastoral housing which will be in on the 2nd floor of the same building housing the other two construction jobs.
2) completing the construction on the park/playground area in Carrillos which has been started and progressed since the beginning of the year.
3) constructing administrative office area for the elementary school located next to the construction site of the park and playground area.

ALSO

The fall discount rate that is now being offered to groups of 10 people or more that come anytime from September 1st or after and departing no later than November 15th is $100 off the cost for each person in the group.
This discount is made possible by the fact that the annual budget made for Strong Missions only takes into account having groups from January and into the middle of August. Any other groups that come are bonus.

what's happening at Strong Missions?

Well since April 11th there has been no work groups here at Strong Missions- not until May 31st anyways, when West Univ. UMC from Houston, TX will be arriving here in Carrillos.

Despite this gap of having no missions groups working with us, there still is much going on around here. Wilbur, Wilmer, and Wagner are here at the house Monday thru Saturday getting the house ready for the large number of people and groups that will be coming to work all during the June, July, and into the first couple of weeks in August.

Current Work Projects at the house include: a canvas awning over the open air area of the front porch of the main house is being installed. Outdoor bathrooms and showers are also being built on the side of the first house. All of this is to help better accommodate the people of the groups to come during the rainy season here in Costa Rica- which starts during the summer months of the continental U.S.
Work at the local Pentecostal Church is also being done. A small wall is under construction to help the church in its operation of a feeding program that it does.

Hey all, some updates over the last few weeks- Since March 14th we have had awesome mission groups from the U.S. come and serve with us here in Costa Rica. A recap of the groups that we had during March:

Alamo Heights UMC CollegeLIFE, San Antonio, TX -> such an awesome and amazing group of young people with such different personalities and gifts. I had lots of laughs with ya'll and seriously enjoyed the time and memories we shared together. Texans- I get along really well with you guys for some reason. Logan, Cici, Sarah- I am excited to see you all again here in July...with my fratbro ;)

Mile High Academy, Denver, CO-> this group was like a bunch of army ants! always high energy and did major work on the retaining wall at the construction site. This was the first Adventist missions group that I've worked with and you guys taught us all here that Adventists DO WORK!

Whobodies, Mt. Pisgah UMC, Greensboro, NC -> the current group that I am with and will be traveling to Poas Volcano, Los Guidos, and then to Cahuita for a 1-day excursion trip. I like this group and definitely look forward to continue sharing with them and showing them around all the sights of Poas, Los Guidos, and Cahuita. Small group of only 8 people but a lively bunch of workers that work hard and play hard.

Other updates for March that I can provide (financial needs/info will be given later) :
The retaining wall for the park at the Carrillos construction site is going along very smoothly and about less than 25% remains for it to be complete. God willing, it will be all done by the mid to late June. After the retaining wall is fully built, a shorter and smaller wall will be built that will serve as a protective barrier between the park area and the street traffic that runs alongside it all.
No painting or other work at the nearby elementary school has been done this month- plans to return there are in June as well as starting some other construction work at the local Methodist Church in Carrillos.

Update: Pastoral Support for Los Guidos

Strong Missions is currently paying $850 in support to Pastor Edgar Ponce and his church staff. We have received a gift of $5,000 this year so far but more consistent and regular support is needed to provide sufficient pastoral support for the entire year. This money helps pay the church leaders who serve the church community in the impoverished area of Los Guidos; this helps them to supports their own families and living expenses.

Update: School Scholarships for Students in Los Guidos area

The current situation:

15 students in 8th grade and up in private schools and special learning institutes- much better quality and faster pace of instruction than the public schools.
Average yearly cost: $1,100 per student. $16,500 total.
We've received $2,200 so far.

The students chosen to receive a scholarship are selected by the leaders in the church of Los Guidos and are noted for their strong desire and potential to learn given the opportunity to overcome the financial burden of going to school (i.e. transportation costs, books, supplies, uniforms)

Update: Los Guidos Feeding Program- Panes y Peces (Bread and Fish)

Details about the current needs for Panes y Peces- feeding program at Los Guidos Methodist Church.

$4,000/month needed to be able to feed 120 kids 2 meals a day (breakfast and lunch) in the low income and needy area of Los Guidos.
Currently there is $1,540 being received each month from churches and individual donors.
Strong Missions is providing $760 each month to help out with the financial needs of the feeding program.
With the approximate total $2,300 available each month- 80 to100 children are being fed on average during the 6 days that meals are served; however the food of the meals are with significantly diminished nutritional value.
The forming of a foundation for Panes y Peces is in the works to help make supporting this ministry more convenient and accessible.

Regular financial givers and donors as well as one-time donations are needed to help meet the $4,000 goal mark that will allow to feed more children with food that has a much higher nutritional value for their growth and development.

The Start of 2010- so far...

Hi.
Just to 'formally' introduce myself, I am Christian Cuellar, Program Coordinator for Strong Missions. I have chosen to create this blog in order to help past and future missionary volunteers interested in the vision of Strong Missions informed and updated with all of the progress. Shortly before the actual start of 2010, Strong Missions was already doing work within the community of Carrillos.
Since Dec. 26th, 2009 until Feb. 24th of this year, there have been 9 groups of church and family missions volunteers that have come to work with Strong Missions. These hard working people have traveled from their homes in the U.S. such as Oklahoma, Texas, Indiana, Illinois, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Minnesota.
Since the beginning of this year, all of these groups have helped to construct a significant portion of a community park and playground; a work project that is estimated to be finished by mid-August...

Go to the Flickr Photostream link on the right side for a collection of pictures of the park/playground work project and of other work and events that groups will do in the future. I will be updating the Flickr account with new pictures as much as I can as the year rolls on.

The next several weeks we will be working with the following groups:

After April 13th the next wave of groups start coming in on May 31st and keep coming all the way until about the second week in August. A lot of work lies ahead and I sure do hope that the work done through Strong Missions continues to grow and impact the lives of those in need.
